We got bored…

So as a fun day out type thing yesterday, we went out for a meal (£8 for two on offer at the Marlborough…thank you very much,) and then, in a thrifty fit of cleverness we went and bought some sainsburys basics toys. Such as this:

Yeah!
At the barry-argin cost of £1.50,

2 different frisbees at around £1.50 each, an inflatable football at £2, and a kite.

All from sainsburys, all awesome outdoor fun-time. So we did after dinner games using everything, until it got dark and cold :(

I’m beginning to like this budgeting malarchy. That’s the most running I’ve done in years.

Tips and Tricks

  • Book train tickets weeks in advance. And spring for a railcard- the £20 you spend on a railcard soon makes itself up in reduced ticket prices.
  • If you are going on a night out, drink at home rather than at a pub. Invite some friends round, Hit Sainsburys for some cheap moonshine and twat some good music on. Surprisingly, often just as fun as going to a pub.
  • Rather than going to a hair salon for a cut, have one of your friends do it. Obviously make sure they’re fully lucid, have two hands, and are not a blithering idiot. Otherwise you could end up with a bowl-mullet. This will save you a lot of money, and also the walk of shame (from salon to house) should Toni and Guy (for example) dye your hair orange.

    devastated. Keira does it better.

    Bargainous summer recipes

You’d be surprised how much less it can cost you to create your own culinary delights rather than buying them from stores. PLUS home made food tastes so much better!

    Fudge Cake recipe:

    • 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour
    • 3 tablespoons cocoa
    •   1 cup sugar
    • 1 cup water
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
    •   1 tablespoon white vinegar
    • 6 tablespoons vegetable oil (not olive or other strong flavoured oil)
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 cup sugar (optional)
    • Icing:
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
    • 1 tablespoon butter
    • 2 cups hot water

Heat oven to 350F. Grease and flour a 20cm round tin.  Place all cake ingredients (except icing sugar) into a bowl and whisk until smooth.  Pour into prepared tin and bake 35-40 minutes. Remove from oven and cool in tin for 10 minutes before turning out.  When cool, either dust with optional icing sugar (vegan and dairy-free option), or top with icing.  To make icing, combine sugar, cocoa and butter, then add small quantities of hot water, stirring continuously, until icing consistency is as you like it.

    Broccoli and Feta pasta Salad

     serves 4

    • 1 pound mixed tri-color pasta
    • 1 head broccoli, chopped into florets
    • 8 ounces feta cheese
    • 1/2 cup Kalamata olives, pitted and chopped
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
    • Salt and pepper

Cook the pasta and drain. Cook the broccoli in a heavy frying pan with a little olive oil over medium heat until crisp-tender – 5-7 minutes. Toss with cooked pasta and olives.

Crumble the feta cheese into the pasta. Whisk the oil, vinegar, and salt and pepper and toss with the pasta.

    Chocolate Chip cookies

    Makes about 12 cookies.

    • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
    • 1 cup light brown sugar
    • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
    • 1 large egg
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons instant espresso coffee powder.

Preheat the oven to 300F. Place the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar in the work bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Beat on medium speed for about 30 seconds, until the mixture is fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla for 30 seconds longer, until well combined. In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to the mixer, while beating on slow speed. Beat for about 15 seconds, stir in the chocolate chips and espresso powder, and mix for 15 seconds longer. Prepare a cookie sheet with about 2 tablespoons of shortening (or use a non-stick spray). Using a 1-ounce scoop, or using a 2; tablespoon measure, drop the cookie dough onto the cookie sheet in dollops about 3 inches apart. Gently press down on the dough with the back of a spoon to spread out into 2-inch circles; there should be room on the sheet for six or eight cookies at a time. Transfer to the oven in batches and, bake for about 20 minutes or until the cookies are nicely browned around the edges. Bake for a little longer for crisper cookies.

    Mango Sorbet

    Serves 6

    • 200g granulated sugar
    • 1 red chilli seeded and finely chopped,
    •   2 mangoes
    • Juice of 4 limes
    • 3 tbsp vodka
    • Tiny pinch of salt

Place the sugar in a saucepan with the chilli and 270ml water. Set over a low heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar has dissolved, then bring up to the boil and cook briskly for 1 minute. Remove from the heat.

Peel the mangoes. Cut the flesh of each mango away from its stone and roughly chop. Place in a food processor and blend until it forms a purée. Add the lime juice and vodka. Mix in the chilli syrup and salt, then chill in the fridge for an hour. Churn in an ice-cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then transfer to a sealed container and put in the freezer. Keep frozen until needed.

    Thank you kindly to;

    For yummy summer recipes :)

    Book fest!

For some reason, we all need books. To feed our minds and the like. I have recently discovered the wonders of Amazon. It saves you money, and it has an incredibly substantial catalogue of reading material.

I have managed to buy really good condition books from here both for my course and for any ‘leisure’ reading I do. In the past few weeks I have managed to get 10 books at the combined cost of £20, including titles such as:

All of which I can recommend whole-heartedly as wonderful reads. Starting at like, 1p each.
So yeah, another way to take care of the pennies.
    Au revoir.

    The wonders of e-bay.

What is this? An easy to navigate online market-place swimming with other people’s crap? Hook. Me. Up.

I’ve been an e-bay addict as long as I can remember. (One of my) favourite pair of shoes was 99p on ebay from a very nice person named Furry_Strawberry. Happy days.

Ebay is ideal if you’re running low on funds, if you’re looking for something you can’t find on the high street, or if you just can’t be arsed to get up out of your chair, and physically LOOK for something. Ebay is the reason my bank balance suffers less, the reason why I can often find exactly what I’m looking for, and the reason that there is a progressively pronounced arse indent forming in the flimsy seat of my desk chair.

By now you have probably gathered that I have a ‘thing’ about online shopping. This is because:

    1. It is SO much easier to type in an item description on a website than it is to go out and look for something you want.
    2. In Farnham, there are very few places to shop.
    3. Additionally, travelling to places where you could POTENTIALLY find what you are looking for requires hard cash. I can’t spare the sterling.
    4. Internet shopping means you can shop anytime, anywhere. I ended up buying an amber bead necklace from Tokyo about two years ago. The postage was around £6, but it’s cheaper than getting a flight out there.
    5. It’s a lot easier to find bargains online. Melikey.
And so, ebay has long been my saviour and first port of call for cheap clothes, shoes, books, DVD’s and the like.
Save the pennies, surf the tintynoot. Good times.

    The shoe weakness strikes again.

Online shopping is superwellgood and stuff. The majority of my stuff comes through the mail in parcel form, and I get inconceivably excited at the prospect of having something to unwrap. Which, come to think about it is weird.

ANYWHO, just a short note to remind you to ALWAYS CHECK THE SALE SECTION.

A few of my favourite online shopping links:

    Topshop online

I MAY HAVE (I did.) accidentally fallen onto the counter with a few SMALL items at the Topshop in Guildford, and managed to walk out £82 lighter. This kind of splurging is inexcusable. I am wracked with guilt, and will not be doing it again. Probably. And in such instances, it’s depressing to think that the dress you just bought for £40, probably cost around £15 to make.

It’s well pretty though, so screw it.

    D

Anyway. going off on a tangent just a touch. Always check the sale link.

    Faith Online

The whole shoe obsession? Can’t get rid of it. I’ve tried. Believe me. (lies.)

But on the subject of discount/sales links, this site is superb for bargains. The ‘Faith for less’ section is pretty darn good. I bought these pretty little things for £20 down from £40, and they make me happy.

    yummy shoesies

For guys and girls alike, As seen on screen has a delightful assortment of bargainous goodies, ranging from clothes, to shoes, to accessories, to beauty products.

This little piece I think is beautiful, and perfect for the summer.

It’s delicate, it’s girly and it’s flattering. Beware of over-accessorising something like this though- too much jewellery paired with fussy fabric detail can look a touch too busy. Just ignore the fact that this dress is in the “As seen on Peaches Geldof” section. That’s the kind of detail we don’t need to know.

For the guys there is a whole clearance section dedicated to men’s fashion and grooming; including hair products, aftershave, and at the moment a 3 piece styling grooming kit.

Now, I don’t know what kind of a person is tickled by such gadgetry- to me it looks terrifying.

Whatever. It’s under thirty quid, and promises

“Soft touch elements and ergonomic shape,” and “Powerful quiet operation and self-sharpening steel blades.”

Jubbly. Who wouldn’t need something like that?!?!???!

    …..

Ok, one more link because I’m hungry. Boo Hoo is an online store with impressively low prices, and some quite nice stuff. You do have to look for it, but a couple of items are really worth looking at.

Got to go, need to eat.

    BBQ fantasmic :)

Filed under: Food, lifestyle, money | Tags: , ,

The sun is shining, it’s warm outside, and there’s nothing to do. Except work. This in itself is depressing- even without considering the fact that in Farnham, the most exciting place you can visit is the toilet.

SO without further ado, a boredom-buster within the monetary boundaries of someone who can barely afford toilet roll without selling their bodies to medical science. WHY didn’t we think of it before? LET’S have a Barbecue!

Note to people- our BBQ was NOT this big. It would've been nice though.

Eating is expensive. Which is a pain in the arse, as it’s kind of necessary in supporting life. Eating out in restaurants (a more tempting prospect when summer approaches,) is a lot more expensive than eating a pot noodle on a plastic chair in the kitchen of your student halls. Depressing.

This is why group BBQ’s are such a good idea. The cost is split equally (always handy), it’s an outdoor activity which means that you increase your chance of being hit by UV rays, (doesn’t happen so much when you’re sat indoors…) and you get to relax and socialise at the same time. Darn lovely. Last week we had a barbie outside. There were around 14 of us, two fat disposable barbecues, and enough meat combined to make a sausage the size of Scotland. Probably.

I think in the end I spend about £4 on food, and £7 on drinkies. A lot cheaper than a night at the Slug and Lettuce and a lot more fun. Twenty burnt sausages and a steaming hangover for the barry-argin price of £11. It also led to drunken antics such as this. Observe:

    lovely.

    Super.

All in all, can highly recommend outdoor pursuits involving food. We also collectively bought a frisbee, which kept the boys happy for hours.

(Also, I don’t know if this offer is still on, but there’s a stand by the front door in Sainsburys boasting packets of six bread buns at 20p each. Well chuffed. There are still 3 packs going hard on top of our fridge.)

    Happy shopping!

    Sunshine and spending sprees

The reasons for this blog are three fold.

    1. The slow transition from spring to summer.
    2. An impending assessment deadline.
    3. My own inability to budget.
This blog will explore different ways in which the whole living process can cost less. I aim to budget, to curtail and to explore different options without giving up on my impulsive shoe buying.
The majority of students constantly fall financially short. Every now and again the conscientious spenders fall into their overdrafts, and those who spray their money around like cats marking their territory are so far into the red that they can no longer see any other colour in the spectrum (unless they’re lucky enough to have some kind of rich family member/ inheritance/ business project ready to bail them out.)
    More soon. Over and out.
